I am a maternity and newborn portrait photographer located in Mansfield Texas, specializing in custom on-location portraits, using both natural light and studio lighting for seniors, family, maternity and newborn session in the Dallas Fort Worth area.
I have compiled a list answers to frequently asked questions about Maternity & Newborn Portraits with Kathryn Ewton Photography.
Please contact me with any questions – I look forward to photographing your family and your newborn!
When should I schedule my maternity session?
I recommend scheduling your maternity session as soon as you can to be sure that I have availability during your 30th-36th week of pregnancy.
What location should I choose for my maternity session?
I love shooting maternity photos both in my studio, as well at local outdoor locations. If you are wanting some photos that reveal your pregnant belly, you may be more comfortable doing so in my studio. Outdoor sessions are also great because of the availability of natural sunlight, as well as the variety of landscape and scenery. I have knowledge of a variety of locations local to the Mansfield area, as well as locations throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. We can discuss the pros and cons of each session location during your on the phone or in person planning session with me. If you desire both studio and on-location maternity portraits, I recommend booking a full maternity session, however if you prefer one over the other, then a mini-maternity session could be a great choice.
Who may be included in my Maternity Session?
The Mom & Dad to-be should expect to both be involved in the Maternity Session. Some photos will just be of Mom, while others will incorporate the special bond & relationship between Mom & Dad before baby’s arrival. If you have other siblings that you would like to include in your full maternity session, please let me know ahead of time so that we can be sure to plan for their participation.
I booked a Newborn Session, and would like to take advantage of the complimentary mini-maternity session, what is included in a mini-maternity session?
I’m so excited that you’ve decided to book your Newborn Session with me! Mini Maternity Sessions take place at one location, either in studio, or within 10 miles of Mansfield, TX; last up to 45 minutes, and provide you with 5-10 images that you may choose to purchase as a print, product, or digital file. If you’d like to include siblings, and/or would like to have maternity portraits featuring studio and on-location portraits, I would recommend asking about upgrading your mini-maternity session to a full maternity session.
When should I schedule my Newborn session?
Newborn sessions should be booked no later than 2 months prior to your due date, this will ensure that you have priority booking once baby arrives. When you book your Newborn Session with me, I will reserve your due date on my calendar–and I only book 2 newborns per month. Once baby arrives, I request that parents call, email, or text me as soon as possible after baby is born, within 24 hours. At that time, I will then take a look at my schedule and let you know 1-2 days and/or times that I have available for your newborn session. Newborn sessions are usually scheduled between 5-10 days old.
What if my baby has to spend some time in the NICU?
I am very understanding, especially being a parent to a micro-preemie, and will work with you to plan the newborn session for after baby comes home. If baby will be spending more than 2 weeks in the hospital, or is born before 34 weeks, I will offer your family a complimentary NICU session. After baby comes home, we will evaluate together the best type of Newborn session for your loved one–depending on age, health, and other factors.
Have I had the Tdap Shot?
Yes, I am up to date on my vaccines, including the Whooping Cough vaccine–and I will not hesitate to reschedule with you if I am feeling ill. Your baby’s health is very important to me. I also wash all blankets and props used after each newborn session.
What should I expect on the day of the newborn session?
If your newborn session is taking place at the studio, I will have the studio set up and ready for your newborn session. I have a variety of backdrops and props, so there is no need to bring anything with you. That said, some of my clients also enjoy bringing a few props that are meaningful to them, such as a special quilt, or bow tie or headband that they purchased, usually off of their favorite etsy shop.
If your newborn session is taking place in your home, then I will provide you with some tips on preparing the spaces we will shoot in, and your home for the newborn session. Some tips include decluttering any rooms we plan to shoot in (such as nursery, living room, or master bedroom), and making sure the home is warmer than usual.
I will determine how to begin the session based on whether baby is wide awake, drowsy, or sleeping. You can expect the session to last between 1 1/2 hours and 4 hours–it all depends on how baby is doing that day. On average, sessions last 2 hours, though I always work with baby’s temperament that day, and so I ask that parents keep that day open for just the session. I will provide parents with some tips on how to prepare for your newborn session once your session is reserved, and send a reminder once baby is born, and we’ve decided on a date for the session. Following these tips help newborn sessions get off to a better start, and generally run more smoothly. For sessions in the home, there will be greater emphasis on lifestyle portraits with baby and family, and if time permits, some posed newborn shots.
Who may be included in the newborn session?
For studio sessions, 90% of the session is dedicated to baby. However, I love for both Mom & Dad to be included in the Newborn session, so we usually spend a few minutes getting a few shots with the family! Siblings may also be included, however priority is given to baby, then to Mom and Dad. If you would prefer greater emphasis on family shots with the newborn, then I recommend booking an in-home lifestyle newborn session.
What is a Fresh 48 session?
A Fresh 48 session is scheduled within the first 48 hours of baby’s life, and may take place at the birthing center, hospital (check with your hospital for visiting hours), or in your home. For this session, I take more of a Lifestyle approach to photographing baby and family members interacting with baby. These sessions are considered a mini-session, and they last approximately 45 minutes. There are no posed portraits taken during a Fresh 48 session. A Fresh 48 session is a great alternative to birth photography for clients who want to have a little time to clean up a bit before being in photos.
